At Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, your safety is our highest priority. Public safety begins in your own home, and small actions can make a big difference in protecting your family and property. Here are essential tips from Metro Fire to ensure your home remains safe:

1. Smoke Alarms Save Lives

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every floor of your home.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly, and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

2. Have an Escape Plan

  • Develop a home escape plan and practice it regularly with your entire family.
  • Ensure every family member knows two ways out of each room.
  • Designate a safe meeting spot outside your home.

3. Prevent Kitchen Fires

  • Never leave cooking unattended. If you need to step away, turn off the stove.
  • Keep flammable items such as towels, paper, and oven mitts away from cooking areas.
  • Install a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible kitchen location and know how to use it.

4. Prepare for Emergencies

  • Assemble an emergency preparedness kit with water, food, medication, flashlights, and essential documents.
  • Stay informed about potential risks in your area and have a communication plan in place.
